Ambitiously started a window & carpet cleaning service for 15 major Hotels & Motels in OKC. in his early 20's. In the early 80's he added a Real Estate to his career, working for "Parker" Century 21 Real Estate. Former High School class mate Sherri Parker-Evans currently operates the business in Norman, Ok.
From downtown LA to Huntington Beach and costa Mesa it took several years to discover Laguna Beach. AHHHHHHHH this is where my life long love for creating art became alive. So many galleries and famous artists work to see.You see, back in Norman no one ever told me that you could actually be an artist.
My beloved "California adopted parents " as I called them, Ron & Diane Villard encouragged me to attend Saddleback College to begin art studies. There was an advanced class the next year at Irvine Valley College where studies continued. Then the glorious oppertunity to move to ,and further studies in, Santa Barbara,Ca.was to much to pass up.
One professor told the class, you are good BUT. You will only just begin to understand painting after your 100th painting. That's your artistic internship. Years of practicing what you have learned. So there went the nights and weekends spent in trial and error for, well, for 100 paintings. Professor was right, a light bulb came on and still does so about every hundred paintings. There are many many many who agree " It's not how much teaching you have. It's how much practice.
1997, I was accepted into Laguna Beach Gallery "Studio 7". Owner John Eagle taught me the Moasic Impressionistic style of painting with single "squarish" thick paint strokes.I was Elated, art sales paid the rent ! If you would have bet me that 9-mo. later I would be living in a S.E. OKLA. cattle ranching town I would have lost the bet. This was one of the biggest unexpected surprieses of life. But it turnes out good. Now, painting all winters & applying to invitational art shows became the new venue.Accepted to shows and winning award ribbons in Breckenridge Co, Kansas City, The May Fair, Midnight Summer Fair, Paseo art Show, Edmond and many other citys I begain to gain ground. As a plus, back in cow town, I learned custom framing and photo repair. Both new talents are a great asset today.
Traveling for 10 years took a toll on me and I missed the beach. Moving to Galveston in 2012 I took the chance opened a gallery (scary for an artist, that meant selling enough to pay the rent). It was a perfect match for my bright colorful paintings. 2018 business had grown past my sole ability to create paintings and also operate the gallery. I now display Limited art pieces in the two galleries mentioned throughout this website. Since my studio is 1-mile from the galleries It is easy to meet customers at one of the galleries to show a painting seen here on the web that might not be hanging in the gallery. Also when you visit the galleries please open this website on your phone because you can order anything right at the gallery. Don't forget that since I do giclee printing, any small picture can be made as large as 60" x 72". And I am well known for Custom Paintings of Just What YOU WANT. Look forward to meeting you in Galveston, Ray Heard
